Let's Talk About Sea and Sand
The beaches of Chania stand as some of the most captivating in all of Crete, celebrated for their stretches of golden sand and crystalline turquoise waters. Here, on the western edge of Greece's largest island, every beach promises an unforgettable experience, beckoning you to return time and time again.
Balos Beach
A pinnacle of any Chania holiday itinerary is the illustrious Balos, renowned worldwide for its breathtaking double-sided beach – or, to be exact, its lagoon. Nestled at the northwestern extremity of Chania, Balos holds the prestigious title of a Natura 2000 site, safeguarding endangered species within its bounds. The moment you arrive at the vantage point offering a panoramic view (ideal for your Instagram feed, no doubt) the sheer magnificence of Balos unfolds before your eyes.Balos beach is not by chance one of the most popular beaches in Chania, as it boasts a feast of crushed pink shells and fine, white sand, with shallow, turquoise waters-ideal for kids and families.
Services: sunbeds & umbrellas, snack bar, parking.
Access: By road & 20 minutes’ walk or 90 minutes boat ride from Kissamos.
Distance from Chania: 56km

Elafonisi
A beach in Chania that resembles Balos (also in a lagoon). It has shallow, turquoise waters and rose-red sand, and is equally ideal for small children. Elafonisi is located at the southwestern tip of Chania and is a popular destination for families, but also for surf and kite surf enthusiasts. Another similarity with Balos is that it is a natural refuge for endangered species.
Services: Sunbeds & umbrellas, snack bar, water sports, parking.
Access: By road or via the E4 hiking trail from Paleochora.
Distance from Chania: 75km

Kedrodasos
Another destination that you should not miss if you are on holiday in Chania! Just down the road from Elafonisi, the heavenly Kedrodasos beach (named after a nearby cedar forest) is a secluded stretch of white sandy beach. It is drenched in clear blue waters and in one part you will find trees that provide natural shade. This Chania beach is also great for relaxing and unwinding or snorkelling, and when the wind is strong it becomes a popular spot for wind- and kite-surfing. As one of the most spectacular beaches in Chania, it is very crowded, so it is advisable to go to Kedrodasos early in the morning. Oh, and make sure you bring the essentials, as the beach is not organised.

Phalasarna
Passing to the west coast of Crete, you will find Phalasarna- the all-inclusive beach resort in Chania - with a wide choice of water sports (jet-ski, SUP, windsurf, paragliding), ideal for all ages. This beach in Chania is a composition of a large and a few smaller sandy beaches. What will you find - apart from an impressive landscape - in Phalasarna? Big waves when it blows and some of the clearest water you've ever seen. We recommend staying late, though, to enjoy cocktails at sunset, creating a memory of your holiday in Chania that you'll surely never forget!

Seitan Port
Another ideal spot for swimming (this time on the north coast, east of Chania city) is Seitan Limani beach. We recommend go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when it's not too crowded. The name of the beach means "Devil's Port" because of the powerful currents, and to get to this stunning beach in Chania you will need to walk down a path for 20 minutes. Seitan Port is located in a secluded cove, wedged between steep cliffs, and although small in size, it certainly steals the show. Is it the best beach in Chania? Maybe. One of the most picturesque? Sure. What to look out for besides the sea and the scenery? But of course the kri-kri!
Here you will find Parking.
Access: By road & 20 minutes on foot.
Distance from Chania: 22km.
