Venizelos Graves

15 min by Car from Lock&Walk

In the eastern suburbs of Chania, on the hill of Prophet Ilias (Prophet Elias), Eleftherios Venizelos (one of the most important politicians of modern Greece) and his son Sophocles Venizelos are buried. The tombs of Venizelos are in a quiet park with pine trees, with a wonderful view towards the city of Chania. On the wall surrounding the tombs, the patriotic poet Kostis Palamas declares: "If any ornaments perfectly match the tomb, place an upright candle pillar on it with a flame that, like Greece, cannot be extinguished." Next to the Tombs is the 16th-century church of the Prophet Elias. Almost every weekend weddings take place here. Near the tombs of Venizelos, there are three cafes with a great view of Chania during the sunset and excellent sweets. Ostria, the Nymphs, and the Owl.
