How to Organize the Perfect Excursion to Rethymno

In previous articles, we've ventured through the outskirts of the Old Town, explored its picturesque surroundings, and basked in the beauty of Chania's stunning beaches, each embracing the rich cultural tapestry of this captivating city. But dear readers, Crete is a multifaceted gem, demanding more than just admiration for its natural splendor and historical depth. Crete, much like a discerning woman, craves entertainment, fine dining, and exotic experiences. While some desires find fulfillment in the lively streets of Chania, others await discovery in the vibrant city of Rethymno.

Let's say you check in at 11 a.m. and fly from Chania at dawn the next day. Why not make the most of your last day by enjoying the otherworldly beauty of Rethymno? You will say to me, where do we leave our luggage? After three articles, you should be ashamed to ask us that question.

A rich travelogue in Rethymno

Rethymno, the third largest city of Crete, has its own character, and to reveal its beauties, it is worth renting a bike to wander through the picturesque alleys of the Old Town and get lost on the beach with the palm trees. Don't be surprised if during the ride some woman treats you to a grass pie or cheese pie stuffed with mizithra and anthotyro or a restaurateur spontaneously treats you to a raki accompanied by an antikristo. You are in "Rethymnaki", as the locals call it, and Cretan hospitality is in their DNA.

Rethymno is a destination for every season of the year. In particular, during the autumn and spring months, when there is not so much tourism, you will discover the real magic that this place hides.

The Old Town - the symbol of Rethymno, the beautiful villages on the sea and the mountains, and the Cretan gastronomy unfold in this special place.

Attractions

Old Town

The Old Town of Rethymno is built on the cape of the northern beach that breaks away from the land and goes into the sea. Walking through the picturesque Old Town through the cluster of houses, minarets of the Ottoman mosques, the 19th-century bell tower of the Metropolitan Church and the lighthouse emerge at various points, giving a unique picturesqueness to the place.

Most of the Old Town of Rethymnon retains its authenticity from the Venetian period, with two main streets and small alleys leading to buildings and squares, while the Turkish period has left its own architectural marks. In fact, because of these characteristics, the Old Town of Rethymnon has been classified as a Historical Monument since 1967.

Rent a bicycle and wander through the monuments of the Old Town, such as the Fortezza, the Venetian fortress, the Loggia, the Guora Gate, the magnificent church of St. Francis, the Venetian harbor -which retains its charm- and some of the surviving mosques.

FORTEZA OLD PORT RETHYMNON CITY

A stroll through the Old Town of Rethymno is like the visitor being lost in the centuries, projecting the history of this unique place where the past intertwines with modern life.

Cave of Melidoni

In the village of Melidoni in Rethymnon is a cave, which is interesting because of its archaeological findings - some of which are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum of Rethymnon. This cave is also known as "Gerontospilios" and according to its website, it was one of the most important cult caves, since Minoan times.

The Bronze Giant of Crete Talos was worshipped in the cave, and, according to mythology, was responsible for the safety and protection of the island from enemies. In 1823, the cave was a refuge for women, children, and warriors to avoid becoming slaves of the Turks, who spotted them and, after they did not come out, set them on fire. In fact, their bones are kept in an ossuary, and visitors will see a unique sight walking through the cave from the stalagmites and stalactites.

Arkadi Monastery

This venerable monastery traces its origins to a bygone era, likely erected during the epoch spanning 961 to 1014 or in the nascent years of Venetian dominion. The present-day church, a testament to architectural evolution, bears the hallmark of the 16th century with unmistakable traces of Renaissance influence woven into its design.

In essence, Rethymno stands as a charming and romantic town nestled between Chania and Heraklion. Much like the entirety of Crete, Rethymno boasts a distinct cultural allure, housing several remarkable attractions. However, as is the nature of all beautiful experiences, vacations are finite. If you find yourself staying in Rethymno as a tourist, your journey back home necessitates a trip either to Chania or Heraklion, both equipped with airports and ports. Should you choose the route to Chania, we advise against the burden of carrying your luggage and instead recommend entrusting your belongings to Lock & Walk's convenient locker room services. With a focus on safety, affordability, and professionalism, we aim to alleviate the stress of personal items, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the brief yet memorable exploration of Chania.
